The Garris side were not indian, some married Cherokee Indians, DNA shows that many eastern indians have the same DNA as people from central France. Many indians were blue eyed, blond, beautiful/handsome people. I sat next to a Cherokee Indian lady from Oklahoma on a Community Association Trip recently, she was blue eyed, blond and beautiful, saying many were like her. Mandan indians were same as well as many other tribes, Shoshone=sheep eaters. The Cherokee got $3.8 Million for their lands in the east, opened schools in Oklahoma, taught them to read and write, to many marrying them by illiterates this was a step up. The Onieda Indians chastised the settlers in Plymouth, Ma saying they needed to come to Onandaga, NY for a REAL education. The settlers built on land given by John Harvard to teach how to read the Bible in 1642 that became Harvard University. The eastern Indians said they came from the East, not west. They had fields 7 miles long in Virginia for grain and vegetables along with hunting wild game, deer, squirrel, rabbit, raccoon, opossum, turkey, grouse, quail, fish, etc.
It was hard to make a living raising mostly corn in the Wilkes Co., NC area, some made home brew to be able to sell it as there was little market for corn. Most left to more palatable areas.
