DNA testing certainly has the potential to break down brick walls but it can also build some new ones. I would like to take this opportunity to clarify some assumptions made by the late Sam Garrison in his books. Sam was my third cousin. In his books he linked the following three lines that now appear to be unrelated. 1. “Our” line from Garrett Garretson who married (1) Elizabeth Ericksen and (2) Mary Baldwin. Sam and I descend from John of the first marriage. The children migrated from New Castle DE to Orange Co. NC. A descendant of Henry of the second marriage has now been tested and his Haplogroup is I1 (“eye-one”). 2. The Jedediah/Ebenezer Garrison line of Duplin NC and Georgia. There are numerous descendants who have been tested and their Haplogroup is R1b1b2. 3. The Paul Garrison line of Rowan NC has at least four matches and they are Haplogroup E1b1b1. In order to understand how this could have happened, you only need to understand the patronymic naming system. What we all have in common is that if we are descendants of one of the cultures that used this system, then each of these lines descended from a different man whose first name was Garret and therefore the sons became Garretson (Garret’s son) then Garrison. This system was common in many cultures so it really doesn’t give us much of a clue to ancestry, all by itself. You could have roots in England, Wales, The Netherlands, any of the Scandanavian countries, and maybe others. This means that in the future each of us could very well be seeing good matches with such surnames as Hendrickson, Paulson, Johnson, etc. The big surprise to me is my own line. The donor who descends from Henry Garrison, brother of my ancestor, is a match to the descendants of James Garrison & Hester/Esther Roberts. This connection had not even been considered but things are slowly falling into place. For instance, each of us had claimed Shadrack Garrison of Barren/Warren Co KY. Now it looks like we could both have been right. What we don’t know, is how James is connected to our line. The parentage of James Garrison has remained a mystery. I would like to hear from anyone who has ideas or who has acquired information that might be a clue. You don’t have to have all of the pieces of the puzzle, all clues are welcome. Sam devoted a great deal of time to his research and I’m sure that he would want to have the record corrected, based on the new information.
