Is my James F. Garrettson really James Freeborn Garrettson s/o Aquilla & Amelia?
Posted by: Candice Buchanan (ID *****4814) Date: January 18, 2003 at 10:57:16

I have been working on the many different connections
to the Greene County, Pennsylvania, Buchanans and trying to contact and find living relatives. Recently, several of the
Garrettson descendants (who come down from Buchanan
through marriage) have been good enough to share some
interesting stuff with me, leading me to the questions
below. I am putting this out on the lists just in case
anyone is related or has any ideas. I really need to
figure out what cemetery they are talking about in
Ohio (see below) so that I can find this man who may
be the man I am looking for. I hope to find other
records for him in that area. Any help is greatly
appreciated!

James F. Garrettson

A popular family tree that has been copied over and
over and circulated on the web, lists the following
man, who may be the same man that married Harriet
McClelland. It should be remembered, however, that no
documentation was included with this tree and I have
been unable to contact the contributor. The original
tree from which the many copies have been made is
found in World Family Tree Volume 12, Tree 4166, also
available to subscribers online at genealogy.com

Here is the listing that may be a match for the James
F. Garrettson who married Harriet McClelland:

"James Freeborn Garrettson
Birth: 11 Jan. 1821, Baltimore, Maryland
Death: 12 Nov. 1900, Ohio
Buried National Military Home Sec. L, R 24
Marriage: ??? ??? , WFT Est. 1838-1871"

The tree cited above lists the above entry for James.
It does not list his wife's name, but it gives her
dates as estimates (Birth: WFT Est. 1817-1837 & Death:
WFT Est. 1842-1921). If this is accurate and if this
man is the right James, then there are several
possibilities (1) it could be a reference to Harriet
herself, (2) this woman could have died before he
married Harriet and Harriet could then be his second
wife, or (3) he could have married this woman after
Harriet died. Any of these options are real
possibilities, though I think the first is the most
likely.

The other interesting thing about this tree, however,
is that one child is listed for James Freeborn
Garrettson and his unnamed wife. A son, William L.
Garrettson, whose dates are also estimated (Birth: WFT
Est. 1842-1871 & Death: WFT Est. 1848-1950). Once
again, if this is accurate and if this man is the
right James, then there are several possibilities (1)
the middle initial "L." is a mistake and this is
really referring to the son of James F. and Harriet
(McClelland) Garrettson whose name was William
McClelland Garrettson. It is understandable that the
infant daughter who died with her mother would have
been unknown to the author of this tree, especially
considering that the author did not know the name of
James' wife. (2) A less likely possibility that
another son named William was born by a different
marriage. I say less likely only because first names
were not usually repeated when naming children unless
the first child by that name had died and in this
case, supposing these are the right people, William
outlived his father and so I do not think James would
have given another son that name.

The parents of James Freeborn Garrettson listed in the
tree were Aquilla Garrettson, Birth: 31 Mar. 1793,
Harford County, Maryland, Death: 18 Oct. 1836,
Claysville, Pennsylvania. According to the tree,
Aquilla married Amelia George 22 Sept. 1818 in
Baltimore, Maryland. She was born 19 Apr. 1796 in
Cecil County, Maryland and died 27 Feb. 1848, interred
in Wheeling, West Virginia.

The Garrettson Family Bible presented by Elizabeth
(Buchanan) McClelland to her grandson William
McClelland Garrettson lists the birth and death of
James F. Garrettson stating that he was born 12 Jan.
1821 and died 12 Nov. 1900. Obviously these dates are
remarkably close to the dates given in the tree cited
above. The vague dates of wife and son also seem
likely to match making this a very likely lead, but it
does require some more research and actual
documentation. If it is accurate that Aquilla
Garrettson died in Claysville, which is in Washington
County just above Greene County, then the family was
in the right location for James to meet Harriet who
was born and raised in Greene County.

I would really like to locate the death place and
burial place of James Freeborn Garrettson as it is
listed in the tree. Once I know the county I can start
a search for an obituary, will and death record. I can
also visit the cemetery to see if anyone is buried
near him such as a wife. I think this is very likely
the same man, but until I am sure I will not add this
data to my actual records only keep it as a note until
further research can be done.

Thank you for any help!
