This note on the various pronunciations interests me greatly in that my ancestor Jarred Burton who married Janey Porter in Bourbon Co KY in 1792 was listed in the many court records in most of those same ways. After their marriage, they bought land and lived in Shelby Co KY. In the land registrations, as well as the wills, there is a variety of these variations.

I have reached a dead end with this marriage, and grasping at straws, wonder if he was given an old family name as his first, as many did in those days. Do you have any records of a Burton marrying into your Garrard family in the 1700s?
