Hello Alvin!

I believe that I may have found some new information for you on your great-grandfather Christopher George GARNETT and his family from Ontario, Canada.

It has taken quite a bit of looking to find him, since he is recorded on the 1871 Ontario census as C. George GARNETT rather than under his full given name of Christopher.

This particular C. George GARNETT was living in Bayham township, Elgin County, Ontario when the 1871 census was taken [Census Film #C9900, District 006, Subdivision E, Division 2, Page 5]. A copy of this census microfilm can be obtained through the National Archives of Canada or through the local LDS Family History Centers.

On the 1871 Census, C. George GARNETT is listed as the head of the household. He was 37 years of age, born in Ontario, a farmer by occupation, member of the Church of England, and was of English ethnic origin.

Living in the same household was his wife Mary GARNETT [who I assume was the Mary Ransom GARNETT later BUCHNER that you mention in your message]. Mary was 29 years old, born in Ontario, and a Baptist.

C. George GARNETT and his wife Mary had two young sons when the 1871 census was taken. The older son's name is recorded as W. John GARNETT, age 4, born in Ontario. The younger son is George GARNETT, age 1 year, born in Ontario.

I think that this younger son George GARNETT might be your grandfather and was probably born in about 1869 or 1870 at or near Bayham township, Elgin County, Ontario, Canada.

I have also located a death record for a person named Christopher G. GARNETT who died on April 27, 1875 at Middleton township, Norfolk County, Ontario [Ontario Death Registration #1875-005505]. Norfolk County lies right beside Elgin County and Middleton township is just a few short miles away from Bayham township. So I think it is quite likely that this is the exact same person who appears on the 1871 census. If so, he would have been only about 41 years old when he died.

The 1871 census shows another GARNETT family living in Middleton township, Norfolk County which I believe may be related directly to Christopher George GARNETT.

Today there is a small town on the map of Ontario in Middleton township called Garnet or Garnett, Ontario which I suspect might be named after this family of GARNETTs. This place is near Nanticoke in Norfolk County and is located about 50 or 60 kilometers east of Tillsonburg and about 40 kilometers southwest of Hamilton, Ontario.

I have quite a bit more information on the various GARNETT families that lived at Middleton township as well as at Tilsonburg.

I know that several members of these GARNETT families migrated into Michigan during the 1860s and 1870s and settled around Genessee County, Michigan.

If you would like to know more about them, please get in touch with me at the email address below.
