Isle of Wight Garners???
Hi there. As usual I am taking the non-traditional approach in my studies of the garner genealogy. The reason being. I am privy to some information about Y-dna testing. Apparently there are 2 completely distinct lines of garners claiming the same lineage.
So I am focusing my attention on the other line I have been studying--the Isle of Wight Line.I find it very ineresting that these Garners may have preceeded the other line, however there seems to be less of their descendants in the early census, as all the other Garners seem to fit the Garner-Keene line.
I have also seen other postings where Garners I have traced to Clinton, Co. Ky had dealings with a possible Isle of Wight Garner in John Killingsworth Garner.
So far what I have seen in the y-dna testing is that a John A. Garner descendant matches a possible descendant of Job Garner.
I would like to throw out some information I have been digging up on the Isle of wight GArners and propose a few theories. If anyone has any information that can help me please do so?
Ok, from my studies the following places are where the majority of the Isle of Wight Garners resided.
Isle of Wight VA;Dobbs, NC; Duplin, NC; Edgecombe, NC; Yadkin, NC; Lincoln, NC; Northampton, NC;Lenoir, NC, Halifax, NC; Surry, NC; Then they seem to have a huge presence in Warren Co. Tennessee, and Washington, GA.
Some peculiar surnames to these Garners: Burgess, Gale, Bullock, Goodrum, Cranfill, Danner, Eaton, Borden, Lacye,Duggan, Saunders, Hall, Neville, Powell, Howell, Hartman, Murphy, Allmond, Carstaphen-adopted Miles, and Randall Garner, Beal, Siegler, Williams, Daughtry, Askew, Parnell(parnal, parnall), Jemacia?, Croom, Dixon (Dickson), Everitt, Turner, Uzzell, bucock?, Boykin, Vaughn and/or Vaughan, Burge, Greer.
These are a few I have run across.
There is a Thomas Garner and a Mary Hall that were married in Isle of Wight 1787. They had children listed in a court document: Thomas, John, Priscilla, Rachel(Saunders) , Richard, James, Sarah(Daniel). Witnesses for will: James Hall, Mary Hall's father. Jesse Garner, John Garner.
other marriages of Isle of Wight:
Edward Croom and Penelope Garner: dau of James Garner
Joseph bullock and Penelope Garner: dau of John Garner
Thomas Garner and Mary Hall; surety Jonas Askew
Matthew Garner and Elizabeth Daughtry (widow);surety James Vaughn.
Jonas Askew and Polly Garner: surety Joseph Matthews
James GArner and Sally Parnell; surety Willis Parnell
Matthew Garner and Peggy Vaughan (parents Adah and Uriah Vaughan)surety: Matthew Daughtry
Henry Jemacia and Keziah Garner surety: James Garner, Charles Murphey
Joseph Garner and Sally Allmond; surety William Allmond.
William Allmond and Elizabeth Toller; surety James Garner.
Some peculiar names to these Isle of Wight Garners: (These Garners seemed to like Greek Names? Argo, archibald, archer, manerva, manervy, permelia(used by IOW before Garner-keene), parmelia, Jacob, simeon, samuel (name of one of earliest IOW Garners)Green, Linton and/or Linson, columbus, Jesse, Jonathan, Needham, Archibald, ARcher, Archie, valentine, sabra, Lazarus, Theophilus, appolonia, Freeman.
I have also seen them name their kids after presidents BEFORE the GArner-keene lines seem to do so.
I picked those up while tracing well sourced Isle of Wight Garners.
Ok, I had a direct focus. I wanted to know the origins of Whiatt/Wyatt Garner b. approx 1756-1780
I did find this older Whiatt Garner in the 1790 Census. The only Garners:
John, Whiatt, William.
I have seen where this Whiatt is supposed to have lived until 1807 but i can't locate him in the 1800 Census. I am thinking he had another name. In 1800, in Surry NC, I find the following Garners:
John (this John is the father of the other 2)
Jacob
William,
in 1810, the picture is even clearer.
The only Garners in Surry, NC are the following:
Eve
Henry E (also known as Etchinson, Atchinson, Atkinson)
Jacob
John
William
This fit perfectly with the family of John Garner and Alcy Eaton. As they had children with those names and dates. Henry E is seen living in Surry. There is a documented will of Jacob GArner and a ledger of this family'd dealings in Yadkin. Morgan and ARchibald (archer, or ARchie)are also peculiar names to this family, as well as the surname Hoots, and Baity.
I believe Wyatt Garner is actually a descendant of the Isle of Wight Line, because this family used Wyatt as a name alot and before the Garner-keene line used it. As well as all of this Wyatt's dealings including wife Kimbrough, and wife's family are from the same area. Even James Saunders Moreland who married Polly Garner bears a trace of these Surry/Yadkin GArners.
As well as the peculiar name Sterling. It is not very well documented. But there is a marriage between Richard Henry Garner and Mary Vaughn's dau: Mary J Garner and an Sterling Goodrum.
The presence of an Archer Garner in Union SC--made me wonder if it wasn't this Iow's Archibald Garner who was also called Archy or Archie, and since there is an Argy Garner present in Union, SC in the following Census--maybe Argy?.This Argy Garner has a James Goodrum Jr. living close to him as well as a John Vaughn who is old enough to be Mary Vaughn's father.
I know it is speculated that Whiatt/Wyatt is of the Garner-Keene line but I don't think so, because the IOW line favored the name Wyatt before the Garner-keene line ever demonstratingly used it. As well as these Garners had extensive dealings in Surry. As well as Whiatt can be located in the Census living among the IOW garners. As he was present in the same county-with no other Garners with John m. Alcy Eaton and John's son William.Asberry in Union, SC is also living next to several Burgess's which seems to link them even more to the IOW line who had Burgess both as surname, and proper name.
There may also be another misplaced Garner in the name of Vinson Garner. I found him living next to a Needham Garner. Needham is a documented descendant of the Isle of Wight Garners.
Peculiarly I found a family lineage tracing the Isle of Wight Line to a Thomas Garner and Mary Macy Lacye. with a JOnathan Garner m. a Sarah Borden. This may be the key to separating these lines.
