Judy,
Thanks for your help.
The line I follow is Willbanks/Wilbanks/Woolbanks' families of (prob. VA earliest) NC nextand SC by abt. 1780s, who later moved into GA and points west. Some traveled in a northwesterly direction into Ill. and Ind., among other states.
Wilbanks/Woolbanks is not an extremely common name, and is easy to pick out.
I am trying to separate families in old Granville Dist NC, later in Bute, Franklin, Vance and Warren cos NC from a Richard Woolbanks who d. 1790 (will) Wilkes Co NC.Richard's daughter married or was closely associated with the Sturdy surname, which she used. She may have assumed the Sturdy surname or was married to a Wm. Sturdy of Wilkes Co NC, who also d. 1790 (will left everything to her) Wilkes Co NC.
Dolly Sturdy with 3 young males in her household is on the 1790 Wilkes Co census, 16th Company, at the end of the census.
An Elizabeth Cargil(l)/Cargile witnessed the will of Richard Woolbanks 1790, as did Campbell and Martin men.
The 1790 census of Wilkes Co indicates the Cargils lived in the 2nd Company, apparently a good distance from 16th Co where Dolly Sturdy lived.
Info I've gotten from the internet indicates a Parrish Garner and Margaret Sturdy married in VA; they had son Sturdy Garner.
Have no idea whether this constitutes a connection or helps me find my Woolbanks in Virginia -- or to resolve the relationship (if any) between the old Granville Dist NC Woolbanks - John, William, Joseph -- and Richard of Wilkes Co.
Richard could have come directly from VA, not unusual migratory pattern for the coastal VA and NC counties; or he may have come from VA following the Pennsylvania Wagon Road that was more centrally located when it entered NC.
Even if Richard followed the PWRd, he could have originated in VA -- settlers everywhere along the route joined the travelers on the road.
It appears the Woolbanks/Wilbanks moved into SC from NC just before theRevolutionary War ended in 1782.
Sturdy families were in early VA; that's known.Changes in VA county names and relocation in the state are confusing.
This is a lot of information you may know already.
Joann
