Garners of Lauderdale Co., AL
Riley Garner, aged 77, and Marion Grant Garner, aged 74, residents since their youth of the Lexington area of this county, are this year celebrating their fifty-fifth wedding anniversaries.Inasmuch as the two Mr. Garners married sisters, the former Misses Nancy Ann and Susan Elizabeth Barnett, also of the Lexington community, the Garners are one of the closest-knit family groups imaginable. To carry this unusual family story still farther, both Riley and Marion Garner each has nine children, 19 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, all of whom are still living. The Garners are an old, proud clan.Numbered among them is John Nance Garner, former vice-president of the U.S., now retired in Texas, who is a second cousin of the two Garner brothers.Only once has there been a split in the loyal clan.During the Civil War, William Harvey Garner, the brothers' father, and John Garner, their uncle, fought with the Confederate Army, while Abe Garner, another uncle and the brother of William Harvey and John, fought with the Federal troops. It is believed that they actually battled against each other near Shiloh. The breach remained, after the war and Abe Garner never had further contact with his brothers.
J. Riley Garner was born 1872 and married Susan Elizabeth Barnett Jan 21, 1894.Marion Grant Garner was born 1876 and married Nancy A. Barnett August 12, 1894.Newspaper article published in 1949 and copied at the AL State Archives.
