I wouldn't necessarily consider this untenable. The properties of the Garners of Northampton County, NC were in the "Panhandle", a narrow strip of land between the Roanoke River and the Virginia border.Their properties were along Beaverpond Creek, Falling Run and some of the property of the patriarch, William Garner, Sr (1745-1824) abutted the "Country line" of the border between NC and VA.Additionallyhe owned property in Greensville County just north of the Panhandle. All of this land was between present day Gaston, NC and Emporia VA.
William had 3 likely brothers who lived in Northampton, Brunswick/Greensville County: Thomas (d 1790 in Northampton), Presley (went to KY after serving in Rev), and Samuel (d ca 1829).Samuel went to Chatham County and left a will there.Capt Grey Bynum of Chatham county deposed in the 1840s that Samuel Garner was from Northampton County. This Samuel's daughter Jenny married in Brunswick County with William, Thomas and John witnessing.Samuel also had a son Guilford who later went to SC.I will have to check my photocopies to see if there was a son Thomas in Samuel's will.(The name Thomas was repeated many times among the Northampton Garners. My great grandfather's older brother was Lonnie Thomas Garner)
This is my roundabout way of saying that these people moved across the border a lot and I feel very strongly that the Thomas you describe is from this family.
