Ron,
I have the following"
"Kathryn Garner, Welshwoman, found innoc. of WitchCraft in
Trial by Water. 2 pounds for burial in Christian ground."
(Shrop. C. O. 1636)
I haven't seen the original source, but I did send an inquiry to a reporter for the Shropshire, Shrewsbury local newspaper. He confirmed the story, saying he had written an article on this topic.
The Mary Lacye who married Thomas Garner apparently stayed in England (Kent) and had a rather large family there. This was reported to me by a Nathan Reed Garner, who visited England a few years ago and did research on this family.
So as it now stands, John Garner(1633-1702)of Northumberland VA could be the son of Richard Garner and the above Kathryn or he could be the son of Richard Gardiner and Elizabeth Hame who came to St Marys MD in 1637.
No one has as yet proved which of these two possibilities are his parents (or if perhaps some other family is his parents).
