John Garner(1633-1702) Northumberland C., VA
There is some new information on John Garner(1633-1702) of Northumberland C., VA that may not be that widely known.
Currently, (at least) three possible sets of parents of Northumberland John Garner are under consideration. All three sets of parents had a son named John in ENGLAND in 1633.
1. Richard Garner m Kathryn ? (from Shropshire, ENG.)
2. Richard Gardiner m Elizabeth Hame (a catholic family who came into St. Marys, MD in 1637, before that they were somewhere in VA and before VA they came from ENG. There is a massive two-volume history of this family by Thomas Richard Gardiner of MD that goes back far into English history).
3. Thomas Garner m Mary Lacye (from Kent ENG).
The new (to me, at least) information below pertains to option 1 above and provides some striking evidence that this John was in VA in 1643 in Henrico County and still a minor at that date. His father, Richard had just died, and his uncle John in England is sending his inheritance. Richard and son John were originally from Shrewsbury ENG it would appear.

The following is from the court records of Henrico Co. in 1643:
Jno. Garner to Wm. Farrar. The sum of 500lbs. to pay for the education and to be the inheritance of my Cousin John Garner, orphan, ward of William Farrar, Gent.400lbs being the balance owed my brother, Richard Garner, for the mill and land on Wenlock Edge, and the farm in Acton Scott, which was our mothers dowry. The third interest in the Lion (acarriage inn at Shrewsbury) was given me freely by my brother when he departed the Realm of England.Even so, for love I bear my brother and Cousin, I include 100lbs to quit title to same. (Hen. C.O.B. 1643-44, page 23)

[To give credit where credit is due, it is my understanding that this new information originated with a Mr. Nathan Garner of NY who notified the late Mrs. Gwen Garner of Randallstown, MD (she is cited in Dr. Sam Garner's 1998 Southern Garners book wherein she provided information on option 3 above). Mrs. Gwen Garner relayed this information to Mr. William B. Garner and it is from Mr. William B. Garner that I received the startling information.]
Finally, as was pointed out to me by Ms. Karen Preston, note that the new information is consistent with the record found in Cavaliers and Pioneers (by Nugent), page 60 wherein we read
" William Farrar, son and heir to William Farrar, late of Henrico, dec'd, 2000 acs. Henrico Co., 11 June 1637, p. 436 Abutting Ely. upon the Gleab land of Varina, extending Wly. to the bottome of ____ Island, Sly. upon the maine and Nly. into the woods. Trans. at his owne costs of 40 pers:
.... John Garner, ...... Rich. Garner,......"
This all implies to me that the option 1 John Garner from Shropshire came into Henrico in 1637 at age 4 with his father Richard (his mother having possibly been executed due to charges of witchcraft but I have as yet to see the original documentation for this story) and inherited a substantial sum of money (as pointed out to me by Mr. Jay Garner)at age 10 in 1643.
It remains to be proven that this young John Garner from Henrico County migrated up to Northumberland County VA c. 1650 at age 17.
I hope someday we will be able to prove which of these three options is the truth, but it's not easy, and the task continues.
Nevertheless, I'm sure Ms. Ritchie and Ms. Wood, authors of the Garner-Keene Families of the Northern Neck of Virginia, would be delighted by this unfolding drama!
