Generation No. 2

2. JOHN2 GARN (HANS1 GARNER) was born 21 Mar 1736/37 in Amsterdam, Noord Holland, Nederland, and died 24 Sep 1808 in Pavia, Union, Bedford, PA, USA. He married MARGARET LEIN1,1,1,1 21 Jun 1767 in Lancaster, Lancaster, PA, USA, daughter of JOHN LEIN and BARBARA BICKEL. She was born 1742 in Amsterdam, Noord Holland, Nederland1,1,1,1, and died 24 Sep 1808 in Bedford, PA, USA1,1,1,1.

Notes for JOHN GARN:
Johannes Gern, his name was anglicized to John Garn. He boarded the ship "Chance" in Rotterdam, and arrived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 1 November 1763, where he took the Oath of Allegiance.

He married Margaret Lein (Seyn) in the German Reformed Church at 40 East Orange St., Lancaster, Pennsylvania. They moved to Frederick County, Maryland and between 1773 and 1778 three of their children were christened in the local Reformed and Lutheran churches there.

On 7 June 1796 they purchased land in Bedford County. On 26 October 1803 John Garn and his wife, Margaret, sold 4 acres and 15 perches of land to John Stoneking for $4.00. John continued to live in the northern part of Bedford County until his death on 24 Sep 1808. He had divided his land equally between two sons, John, Jr. and Frederick before his death.

Emigration: 1 NOV 1763 Philadelphia,Chesster Cty,Pennsylvania 2
Note: Biography: In reference to Union Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania: "Pioneer settlements probably began soon after the revolutionary war. The following settlers (and probably others) were located in the township prior to 1794: Valentine Bowser, John and Frederick Garn (or Carn, as now written...The first sawmill in the township was built by Frederick Garn, on the present Beard farm, early in the present century...William Griffith built, on Bobb's Creek, the sawmill now owned by J.H. Griffith...John Garn, one of the earliest pioneers, was born in Holland, and moved to this township from Virginia. He died in 1808, at the age of seventy. His son, Frederick, lived and died in this township, where his descendants are still numerous." ("History of Bedford, Somerset and Fulton Counties, Pennsylvania,"Waterman, 1884, pp. 350-51).

John Garn Sr. boarded the ship "Chance" in Rotterdam. the ship called at Cowes on the Isle of Wight, then crossed the Atlantic Ocean, sailed up the Delaware River, and docked at Philadelphia, where Johannes was administered the Oath of Allegiance, as was required of foreigners, on Nov. 1 1763.
On June 21, 1767 he married Margaret Lein in the German Reformed Church, Lancaster, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. On 7 June 1796 they purchased land in Bedford County. On 2 6 October 1803 John Garn and his wife, Margaret, sold 4 acr es and 15 perches of land to John Stoneking for $4.00. Joh n continued to live in the northern part of Bedford Count y until his death on 24 Sep 1808. He had divided his land equally between two sons, John, Jr. and Frederick before his death. The sons legally settled this intestate inheritance by making token payments to each of their siblings in return for quit claim deeds which prevented them from contesting the land inheritance.

Johannes' body was carried to the top of a ridge that overlooked his farm and there he was buried. In this small cemetery, now overgrown with locust trees and shoots, there are three headstones standing. Only one of the headstones has an inscription. It reads:
1808 SEPT
I.G 70. 6. 3. 3
Interpreted it reads " Died in September of 1808 Iohannes Gern, 70 years 6 months 3 weeks and 3 days of age.

Note: Between 1778 when their third child, John Garn, Jr., was born and 1787, when Johannes and Margaret sold their farm to George Free there is a space of nine years where no known records exist for this family. It was perhaps during this period that the family made their trip to Europe, or perhaps made a second trip. While on this trip their fourth child, Frederick, was born. This explains the date of 8 August 1781 that family tradition declares is the date of the original emigration into Baltimore, Maryland from Amsterdam, Holland after a stormy voyage of 54 days at sea. The author could find no record of this arrival, however. 9
Residence: 1787 , Bedford, Pennsylvania, USA 10

A story related to Dolphas Garn Phillips by his grandfather, Philip Garn, a son of Daniel and Mahala Garn tells the following: Before emigrating to America John Garn, Sr. left over a million guilders in a trust in Holland because he feared it would be seized by the government in Philadelphia. He later returned to Holland to recover the money. However, too many years had passed since it was deposited and the funds had become the property of the Dutch government.

One thing that lends validity to this family story is the fact that there are no records to indicate that John was ever indentured or bound to anyone; nor is there anything to show he was ever a convict, which is how many found their way to the colonies. This shows that he had enough funds at his disposal to pay for passage as well as to secure lands once here. If this story is true, it ties may pieces of the Garn family puzzle together. It would account for the lack of records for John and Margaret in America between 1778 and 1787, because during that time they could have been in Europe trying to recover their money. There is a record in the LDS church Genealogy Library that shows a son named John Garn, born to John Garn and Margaret Lein in Noord, Amsterdam, Holland in 1771. No other information about this event has been located. If this is accurate, the child must have died because a second son, *also named John [see*NOTE below], was born to them in 1778. Unable to recover the money they returned to North America.

!NOTE: [by Dianne Harley Wintch]
...*Naming patterns in German speaking countries were different. This includes German portions of Pennsylvania, and those known as “Pennsylvania Dutch”, and Switzerland. At baptism, if two given names were given to the child, the first given name was a spiritual, Saint's name. The second given name was the secular or call name, which is the name the person was known by, both within the family and to the rest of the world. For example, it was not uncommon for all of the sons in a German-speaking Swiss family to have Johann as their first name. This custom was originally adopted in Germanic and other regions in Europe from Roman Catholic tradition and was continued by the Protestants in their baptismal naming customs. The spiritual name, usually to honor a favorite saint, was used repeatedly and was usually given to all the children of that family of the same gender. The same goes for girls. With this in mind, understand that a man named Johann Peter Wolfersperger would never be found in records after baptism as Johann or John. He would be listed as Peter Wolfersperger on tax rolls, military musters, etc. In other words they would be known by what we think of as their middle name.

It has been put forward that the father of John Garn had the surname of "Garner". In German naming practices an "er" or an "ner" added to a surname denoted that the person worked with that object or at that occupation...or that the person was from a specific geographic location or city. An "in" or "en" added to the end of a name is a Germanic language suffix denoting that the person is female: example-The correct spelling of the last name of Mary Spargurin would be Spargur, not Spargurin.

Other practices common to Germany include the use of abbreviations in written entries and the use of nicknames for parents and children. Therefore, Johannes Schmidt may appear in the records under the nickname of Hans. The correct name would be Johannes....

Text: There are two additional documents that place John Garn, Sr., in Frederick County, Maryland...One document is a record of men who signed the Oath of Allegiance and Fidelity to Maryland during the Revolutionary War. Also signing this Oath of Allegiance with John Garn was a man named Jacob KERN. These two names often occur together indicating a family relationship. Family tradition has it that there were three brothers who emigrated to America: Christian, Frederick, and John. Although no record for Jacob was found he could be another brother, or an uncle who emigrated earlier.

The second document placing John Garn, Sr. in Maryland is a
deed recorded on May 12, 1787 in Frederick County, where John KERN, a farmer, and his wife, Margaret, sold to George Free a fifty-acre tract of land known as "Woden" for £150.

Note: The "Chance: was built in New England in 1755; her tonnage was 160 tons; she had a crew of 13; the owner was J. Crawford and Charles Smith was the Captain. From Rotterdam the Chance sailed into the North Sea, through the Straights of Dover, and into the English Channel. The ship called at Cowes, sailed out of the English Channel into the Atlantic, and headed for Philadelphia. Beyond these recorded facts nothing else is known of the actual journey across the Atlantic Ocean.

On March 9, 1771 the General Assembly of the Province of
Pennsylvania created Bedford County from Cumberland County. William Proctor, a Philadelphia land agent, acquired a tract of land located in Bedford township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania. This tract was called "Werden." Proctor sold this land to John Garn, Sr. on June 7, 1796 for £150, Pennsylvania currency. This deed spells the ane as John KERN, and describes him as living in St. Clair Township, Bedford, Pennsylvania.

This is the land on which John resided for the remainder of
his life.

Note: This church was founded in 1729, and located at 40 East Orange Street in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Although there was no ordained minister amongst the congretation a layman named John Conrad Templemann, a tailor from Heidelberg, had conducted regular services since 1725. By 1736 the congregation had grown and acquired a minister, John Jacob Hoc. A log church was built, becoming the first church erected in Lancaster, and the sixth Reformed Church built in the Province. It had a steeple and a bell which they had purchased on December 27, 1745, along with a clock, from the Dunkards in nearby Ephrata, Pennsylvania for £60. The Dunkards had torn down their spire, discontinuing the use of such "Babylonian trash." The bell was initially hung from the limb of a hickory tree near the court house, under which the Indians held council, and from which the town of Lancaster received its first name of Hickory Town." The old log church was moved across the street and a stone church was built in 1752. The bell was used until 1774 when it burst on an intensely cold day while it was summoning people to worship services. The stone church remained until 1852 and it was in that church that the old bell was rung for the wedding of John Garn, Sr. and Margaret Lein [Seyn].

In 1937 the original records, which were in German, were
translated into English by William J. Hinke who anglicized Johannes' and Margaretha's names to John Gern and Margaret Seyn. The records show they were married on June 21, 1767 by Reverend John William Hendel.

(History & Biographical Profiles of the Garn Family & Some of its Branches)
by Philip G. Garn; 1989 (3 Volumes with index)

(Vol. 1 pages 67-72)

Barbara Garn was born Frederick County, Maryland on September 10. 1773. (She was named Maria Barbara; however, she was always referred to simply as Barbara.) Maria Barbara was christened on 27 May 1777, with Johannas and Mary Shenk, as her sponsors. She was married, probably in Maryland, to Thomas Croyle. A publication identified only as the Tribune published the following story about Barbara Garn and her husband Thomas Croyle on February 1, 1895. The story is told by Squire B. F. Slick of Conemaugh Township, Cambria County, Pennsylvania, who said that he lived beside the Croyles for eighteen years and dug both their graves. Squire Slick states that these events were related to him by Mr. Croyle in 1852 at Summerhill, Cambria, Pennsylvania. It was a rainy day and they were inside a cooper shop.
Just a little over 100 years ago, in the spring of 1794, Thomas Croyle and Barbara, his wife, took their wallets on their backs and set out on foot westward from Hagerstown, Maryland, to seek their fortunes. They found often only ill broken footpaths to guide them on their journey, and sometimes not even those. The loneliness was broken once in passing through what is known as the Switzer settlement in Beford
Arriving at the site of the present town of Summerhill, this country, then but a barren laurel, they encamped for several days. Finding all kinds of game plenty and a soil that appeared rich enough to produce abundantly if properly cultivated, the old pioneer proposed to his wife that they settle down there and make it their home. This proposition was agreed to, and they built a cabin, and set to work to clear out the laure. At the time a colony from Wales had formed a settlement about five miles north of Ebensburg, which they called Beula.
In the spring of 1795 Mr. Croyle and wife concluded their new home would be more heartsome if they had some domestic animals, and, as the Beula colony was in their own condition in that respect, they set out for Hagerstown to secure the foundation of a barnyard family. They traveled, as usual, on foot, and after visiting awhile in Hagerstown, they returned to their mountain home in the same manner, each with a pig in a sack. By autumn their family of porkers had increased to seven. The people of Beula heard of their neighbor's affluence in the pig line, and Mr. Stephen Lloyd straightaway visited Mr. Croyle and secured what proved to be the progenitors of all the porkers the Colony ever owned.
Mr. Croyle was, of course, adept with the rifle, and assures the writer that during of 1795 he killed ninety-four deer, three bears, and sixteen wild turkeys, beside a great deal of other game not edible, and of which no account was kept. He said his attic was strung full of venison saddles. "jerked" or dried, and his wife told him not to kill any more deer, as they had enough meat to last over a year. One day while they were working in the field, their log house took fire and burned down before they discovered it, and thus they lost all their meat and their household effects. Then Mr. Croyle was obliged to shoulder his old flintlock and procure a fresh supply of meat. In the meantime they built another log house, which met the fate of its predecessor three years later, at the hands of the Indians. Mrs. Croyle then took matters into her own hand, and said they would build a stone house and plaster the attic floor six inches deep. It was done and the house still stands.
They then built a grist-mill, from which the locality was called Croyle's Mills until the Allegheny Portage railroad was completed, when Mr. Croyles place was called the Halfway House. In the meantime Mr. George Murray, who married Mr. Croyles daughter built a large hotel and the post office was established, which was, and is today, called Summerhill.
The settlement began to grow and improve rapidly after the Pennsylvania railroad was in operation. Plenty of people came into the community, and plenty of them went into debt to buy land and put up buildings. Mr. Croyle was a very kind and obliging man, and bailed almost everybody who asked him. As a consequence, he compelled to pay out as bail money to such an amount it almost bankrupt him. the "mother" as he affectionately called her in relating the matter, came to his rescue again, and therefore he made a careful examination of every business transaction before it was consummated.
In addition Mrs. Croyle was the only doctor in the community up to the time of her death in 1864, and served the people in that capacity for miles around. According to the good woman's account of her age at the time of Cornwallis' surrender....which she distinctly remembered...she must have been one hundred and sixteen years old at the time of her death.
The importance of religion in the lives of these people is exemplified by Barbara Croyle who, in 1820, at her own expense, built and donated to the congregation the first Protestant Church in Cambria County, St. John's Lutheran Church in Summerhill. she had her husband are buried in the church's cemetery.
The Croyles also recognized the advantages of an educated community and on March 8. 1838 they donated one quarter acre of land at Croyle's Mill to the School directors od Summerhill to build a school.

Notes for SAMUEL CLYDE WALTER:
According to my grandmother, Fannie Mae Walter, there was a fire her family's barn in PA that held the harvested crops. The head of the family, Samuel Clyde Walter, moved the family from PA to OH, where Samuel's brother, Charles, lived. My grandmother recalls her family having stayed with Charles and his wife, Melissa for a time. The house was pretty full with two families in it. My grandmother, having been a child at the time, and likely hungry, recalls Charles Walter's family serving her family potato soup.

Her remaining sisters are Pearl Bergman and Betty Greiser of Ohio, Dorothy Rae Boehk of Massachusetts and Florida, and Fannie Mae Davis of Woodsville, N.H. Her surviving brother, Charles Walter, resides in Texas.

In high school, Kay worked as a nanny and cook. She graduated from Davis Business College as a secretary. After graduation, her varied jobs included the positions of secretary and telephone operator. She was a USO hostess in Toledo, Ohio, during the early years of World War II when she met her future husband, Edgar Musty of Piermont, N.H. They married May 8, 1944, in the Piermont Congregational Church.

During Edgar's service years, Kay accompanied him to each military base posting, working various jobs, including box-making at a sawmill in Texas. Her favorite position was as a secretary in the office for test pilots at Boeing Aircraft in Seattle, Wash. She enjoyed the city of Seattle with its mild climate, rolling hills and the expansive Pacific Ocean.

After the war, Kay and Ed bought the Musty farm in Piermont, N.H., from his parents. Katherine helped run the family farm while raising four children, Jane, Samuel, Susan and Peter. During this time she was also very active in the community: a member of the "Watch-M-Pops," a group of expectant mothers spending social time together; a longtime member of the Women's Fellowship of the Piermont Congregational Church; as an instructor in the Ford-Sayer Ski Program in Orford, N.H.; and providing flowers for the Piermont Congregational Church services.

Among her many accomplishments, Katherine brought her sister, Fannie Mae Walter, and her friend, Helen Proshek, from Ohio to the area to meet and marry two of the bachelor farmers of Piermont - Eric Davis and Fremont Ritchie.

After retirement from the farm, Kay was very busy continuing with many community activities, such as the Women's Fellowship, spending many hours organizing and soliciting for church suppers and other fund-raisers as needed. Known for her vibrant and spacious gardens, Kay was active in the Haverhill Garden Club for several years.

Katherine's first passion was for her husband and family and after retirement her grandchildren, Emily, Jacob and Tyler Musty; Oliver Stewart; and Ira and Margaret Musty were central in her life.

Her second love was for her gardens. Katherine loved to show her flowers and share her plants with friends and family who stopped by. She continued to grow and tend her flowers for her church and her friends and family up until the day before she went to the hospital. In addition, Kay enjoyed traveling to visit family or discover new places, and spent many Saturday mornings at yard sales and flea markets browsing for bargains and presents for her family.

Katherine was predeceased by her husband, Edgar Musty; and will live on and be cherished in the memories of her children, Jane (Musty) Wilcox of Newton Corner, Mass., Sam Musty of Piermont, N.H., Susan Musty of Lyme Center, N.H., and Peter Musty of Ryegate, Vt.

Donations in her memory may be made to Piermont Village School Arts and Entertainment Fund (to bring cultural events and teaching to the school), Attn: Nancy Sandell, Principal, P.O. Box 98, Piermont, NH 03779; or Hospice at Mt. Ascutney Hospital, Windsor, VT 05089.

There will be a memorial service and celebration of Katherine Musty's life at the Haverhill Congregational Church on the Haverhill Common, Oct. 22, at 2 p.m. The Rev. Elizabeth Upton will preside. A reception will follow at the Parish Hall.

Notes for DEACON EDGAR H MUSTY:
MUSTY: Edgar Henry, 85
Tuesday November 30, 2004

MUSTY: Edgar Henry, 85, of Piermont, N.H., died early Sunday morning, Nov. 28, 2004, at his home with his family around him.

He was born in Lyndonville on Feb. 27, 1919, to Marion (Gorham) Musty and Alfred Henry Musty. In 1920 his family moved to a dairy farm in Piermont, N.H. Edgar resided in Piermont until World War II.

During the war, Ed was in the Signal Corps stationed throughout the United States. While in Toledo, Ohio, he met Katherine Walter at a USO dance. They were married on May 18, 1944.

After WWII, Ed and Kay returned to Piermont and took over the family dairy farm until their retirement in December 1978. During those years, Ed and Kay volunteered as instructors with the Ford-Sayer skiing program in Orford, N.H. Ed was also a deacon at the Piermont Congregational Church for many years. He always found the time to take time out from the farm chores for coffee with visitors who stopped by the farm, whether strangers, salesmen, or family and friends. All who knew him appreciated his positive outlook on life and his delightful sense of humor -- even when he teased them with a sparkle in his eyes. Ed also played baritone throughout his life. He was a member of several local musical ensembles: The Lyme Town Band, McLure's Alumni Band and the Mad Bavarians. During his last years at the farm, Edgar also sold local real estate. He loved walking the land so much that when he found a piece he loved, he bought it.

After retirement, Ed continued his musical pursuits and remained an avid outdoorsman. He walked the woods for hours at a time and enjoyed improving his woodlots. He also would visit his son, Peter, in Ryegate, Vt., to try his hand at logging. Ed drove the skidder while Peter would fell and limb the trees. He also enjoyed flea markets and yard sales where he would hunt for old tools and gadgets. He'd clean and tinker with his "treasures" in his basement workshop. Ed was also a student of local histories and collected many maps and stories of our local towns.

Edgar was predeceased by his brother, Robert Musty. He is survived by his wife, Katherine (Walter) Musty of River Road, Piermont, and his sister Ann (Musty) Eisler of Grecley, Colo. Edgar has four adult children, Jane (Musty) Wilcox of Newton Corner, Mass., Sam Musty of Piermont, Susan Musty of Lyme Center, and Peter Musty of Ryegate, Vt. Ed also has six grandchildren.

At his request, Ed's family donated his body to the Dartmouth Medical School for cancer research and to further the training of its medical students. Donations in Edgar Musty's memory may be made to Hospice VNA/VNH, 46 South Main St., White River Junction, VT 05001.

There will be a memorial service Saturday, Dec. 4, at 2 p.m. at the Piermont Congregational Church.
