John Garlington of Laurens County, SC
I am researching history of my house at 840 Union Street in Spartanburg, SC.Any information about the Garlington family or this house would be greatly appreciated, as I am composing my application to have the house listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Here's a brief summary the info I have thus far:
- David R Duncan purchased 300 acres off Union Street in 1874
- His daughter Mary Elizabeth Duncan married John D Garlington of Laurens County, SC
- It is unclear the age of the house, and if it was built for David R Duncan or build by Mr. Duncan as a wedding gift for his daughter and Mr. Garlington
- In 1904, 4 acres of the original 300 acres was transferred to Mary Elizabeth and John D. Garlington (that is the land my house is on)
- The land surrounding the home was donated to the City of Spartanburg in February 1923. In the deed, the Duncan family specified that the eleven acres of land would be given to the City only if its use remained public for all to enjoy. This land became known as Duncan Park
- The surrounding area was subdivided and developed by Newbury Realty and Auction Company in November 1924. A plat of the property (Plat Book 9, page 18) shows newly divided lots of “Garlington Estates” as well as the footprint of the Duncan family home (now belonging to son-in-law John D. Garlington)
