Nancy and Terri,
I am a direct descendant of William Garland, born in 1750's in North Carolina and of Lydia Cooley Garland. Reading your contributions, the Garlands I have been in contact with find no connection to the Wm Guttridge Garlands, in Halifax/Edgecomb Counties of North Carolina thus far. Joseph Garland was a son of William, sometimes referred to as William Joseph Garland, but that middle initial also is not confirmed yet. We are at a stumbling block finding Williams parents, though there is a possibility of his being the son of a John Garland, senior, living in the Isle of Wight, Va. Am enclosing the known facts so far about Joseph (Jasper) Garland. We dont go by the DAR records as being totally correct, not without sufficient documentation to rely on. No bibles, or court records back up the facts on William, other than the record of some of his military service both in North Carolina (the 10th Additional Line Reg. of the Halifax region), and later in 1782 with Francis Marion in South Carolina for a short period. His will is recorded that has been found. He was buried somewhere in the Darlington, South Carolina area, but his grave was lost during a highway repaving job in 1930's.

GARLAND Joseph Jasper, Senior[1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
1794 - 1871
