Hi Donna,
It looks like you are definitely related to my husband's family but I can not tell you exactly how. I am surprised that you have not had much response yet as there are quite a few researching this family.
There is quite a bit of information just on the internet, especially posted on these forum. I got a lot of my info from a web page that is no longer in use. I have not had the time to find what happened to the host. It was called the Willow Tree and I believe the creator was Romy Lecerte but not sure on the spelling of the last name. She had tons of info on the Metis family from around Willow Bunch, Sask and the Red River Settlement.
The Gariepys were involved in the Reil Rebellions and fled South into Montana and North Dakota. I guess things didn't go so great there either as a good number of them returned to Canada, including my husband's great great grandmother Emily Gariepy (Guardipee) Fellers.
The name changed several times during this turbulent time of moving. The census indicates that they could not read or write.
I would love to share what I can with you and hopefully you can find more of your direct tree.
Where has your family ended up?
Please feel free to post back or email me directly.
Kate Lowes
