The "Genealogical Register of the First Settlers of New England" (John Farmer, 1829) listed 3 Garfields living in Watertown, MA:

1. EDWARD GARFIELD - a freeman in 1635. He had a son Joseph b. in 1637.
2. According to Barbara (previous poster), an Edward Garfield was the father of SAMUEL GARFIELD. The above source says that Samuel, also of Watertown, was an "early proprieter".
3. BENJAMIN GARFIELD, of Watertown, is listed as a "representative" in 1689.

I have no idea if my Seny Garfield (b. bef. 1792, VT, m. Allen B. Smith and moved to NY) is descended from any of above Garfields.
