Death:       bef 1608
Father:       UNKNown GARDNER, 11G Grandfather

The most common source of surnames after the Norman Invasion of 1066 by far was occupations. “Almost every manor and castle in the Middle Ages kept a garden and employed an individual to take care of it.” These gardens were planted to supply manors and castles with herbs, and fruits and vegetables when in season. William Fitz Stephen in the 1100s spoke of the “spendid gardens just outside the city walls.” Gardeners often walked through the streets crying loudly to advertise their produce.
The name Gardner was used as early as 1273 in the famous Hundred Rolls of England. In that document was “Geoffrey le Gardiner”, “Richard le Gardiner”, Ralph le Gardener”, and “William le Gardiner or Gardener”.
The name Gardner is most frequenly found in the eastern counties of England south of the Wash and in the midlands.

John Gardner came over to America in 1682. He was persecuted in England for his Quaker faith. His Certificate of Removal from the Quaker Meeting at Purton, Wiltshire is dated April 5, 1682. (The name George Harmer appears among the signers.) John’s marriage to Elizabeth Walter was authorized by the Philadelphia Monthly Meeting of Friends on April 3, 1684. On Nov. 25, 1688, Friends were appointed to inspect into the differences between John Gardner and Philip England. It was reported on Sept. 24, 1693 that John Gardner hath absented himself from our meeing of worship. But on Jan. 27, 1696, John Gardner & family were in great necessity for relief and so probably appreciated the help from the Quaker community. They were given 5 pounds towards the expense of building a house.

John Gardner settled in Blockley Township in the Fairmount Park area of Philadelphia and his home was on 100 acres near the western end of the Market Street Bridge where the Pennsylvania Railroad terminal is now located. Blockley Township was consolidated in 1854 into the city of Philadelphia; it was located where Fairmount Park is now situated. (This township was mentioned in a Road Docket in 1705; in 1844 the Borough of W. Philadelphia was taken out of Blockley; more was taken out in 1850; and in 1853, the Belmont District was taken out; and it was finally consolidated into the city of Philadelphia as mentioned above.)

In Elizabeth Gaunt’s will is mentioned “friend and housemate” William Bispham. Someone on the Family Search claims that William Bispham was a spouse of Elizabeth Gardner. I do not know if she married this man before she died or not. He must have been in the picture for a long time, because daughter Elizabeth named her first child William. Another man on Genealogy.com claims that William Bispham married Elizabeth Gardner around 1765.
In the 1790 Census, William Bispham is living with 2 females in Blockley Township; I assume that one of these is Elizabeth Gardner. Next door is William Rose, nephew of Elizabeth--and down the street is Andrew Yocum and his wife Sarah, daughter of Elizabeth Gardner.
Here is an item listed in the Pennsylvania Gazette on June 11, 1794. “Stolen from the market, about six weeks ago, a light bay mare, with a black mane and tail, a small star in her forehead, and about 14 hands high. Whoever takes up said mare, and brings her to Mr. Siter, at the Middle Ferry on Schuylkill, shall have four dollars reward and reasonable charge, paid by William Bispham, Blockley.”

A man on Genealogy.com has Thomas Ganthony or Thomas Gaunt. Is it possible that he changed his name? On many records, his name is listed as Thomas Grant!

Richard Gardner was baptized in Christ Church. I am not sure that his marriage to Elizabeth Evans is correct; he would have only been 14 years old. It must have been another Richard Gardner who married an Elizabeth Evans.
