Myrna,
Here's what I know.Matthew and his parents, Benjamin and Lucy, and several brothers and sisters came to Brown Co. from New York in 1800 (Matthew was 10 years old).Matthew had a falling out with his father over religion and as he pursued his lifetime of ministry he didn't stay in contact with his siblings.I know about his brother Seth and James R. was not his son.I know that his brother Rodman married Polly Worstell and that his brother Simeon possibly only had one daughter. That leaves Phineas, William, Henry, Abraham and Benjamin.Being that Brown Co. is right on the Ohio River, one or more of these brothers could have easily gone to Kentucky.Matthew was one of the youngest boys so your James R. could even be a grandson to one of Matthew's brothers given his year of birth around 1840.From everything that Matthew wrote about his family, there may have been a few cousins from New York who moved into Kentucky or Ohio after Matthew's family but he kept no close contact with them.In fact he gives more information about the family that stayed in New York and Rhode Island.
I am Matthew's 5th granddaughter on my Grandmother's side and his 5th great niece on my Grandfather's side (they were 4th cousins, once removed). My father has traced the Gardner line back to 15th century England and I have a copy of Matthew's autobiography.
I will let you know if I turn up any clues as to James R.'s parents.
Lorri
