DERBY NEWS:
Thursday, Oct. 11, 1906, MRS. JOHN ROE, died of heart failure at her home
five miles west of town at the age of 39 years, 7 months and 6 days. MRS.
ROE was born in Washington County, Virginia, May, 1867. The deceased leaves
a husband and four small children, mother, five brothers and one sister.
She was a member of the M.E. Church, and was highly respected by all who
knew her. Funeral services were held at the M.E. Church, conducted by Rev.
A.W. Armstrong, after which the remains were laid to rest in the Derby
Cemetery. The entire community extends sympathy to the bereaved family.
WILL DAVIS of Cambria, was on our streets last Friday.
MRS. M.T. GRIMES entertained Mesdames FLORA MORRIS, ANNIE SWICK and SADIE
MORRIS to dinner last Wednesday.
OLIVE POLLARD returned to her home at Humeston last Saturday.
MRS. T.A. BOWN of Chariton, spent Friday with MRS. D.A. MCMAINS.
MR. HICKOK and family of Pre Emption, Ill., returned home Friday after a
short visit with his brother, ROB, and family.
MRS. EUNICE PARMER and baby came Thursday to spend a few days with her
grandparents, P.P. SHUCK and wife.
E.M. BLIZZARD and MRS. ADA GRIMES were Chariton shoppers Thursday.
ALBIA GARDNER of Cambria, spent Friday with her aunt, MRS. MAGGIE MELVIN.
MRS. CORA OEHLMANN left Saturday for Des Moines to visit her mother and
other relatives.
Last Friday evening a reception was given at the home of W.P. WOLVERTON and
wife in honor of REV. and MRS. U.G. EVANS. There was a large number present
to enjoy the occasion. REV. EVANS and family will leave this week for
Sweetwater, Ill., where he is engaged as Pastor of the Presbyterian Church
of that place. Their many friends regret the departure of these good people
ISAAC GUYER and DI ANTHA KIRK, of Derby, were united in marriage at Chariton
Oct. 12.
MRS. ANNIE SWICK returned to her home Thursday after a few weeks' visit with
relatives.
DR. PERMORT of Des Moines will preach at the Presbyterian Church, Sunday,
Oct. 21, at 11 a.m.
A number of ladies of the M.E. Church very pleasantly surprised MRS. U.G.
EVANS at the home of MORT GRIMES and wife last Thursday evening. An elegant
supper was served, and the evening was spent in social conversation and a
general good time was had by all.
GRANT SIRES of Humeston, was a business visitor here Monday.
MERL DAVIS spent Saturday and Sunday at home.
MARION SUTTON of Indianola, came Friday to visit his parents, GEORGE SUTTON
and wife.
HARRY ROBINSON and wife spent Sunday with her sister, MRS. R.E. MORRIS.
J.W. BARGER and wife left Tuesday for Witchfield, Mo., where they will visit
their sons, JAMES and JESSE.
ELSIE TURNER left Monday for Des Moines, where she will attend Drake
University.
JESSIE MILLER returned Tuesday from Nebraska where she has been visiting
relatives and friends.
A.J. FIGHT and wife entertained to dinner Tuesday REV. EVANS and family, REV
VAN DYKE and wife, and MRS. N. BREMER.
Messrs. CHAPMAN and WOLVERTON returned Tuesday from their trip in N. Dakota.
MRS. MATTIE EKLEBERRY returned Monday from Corydon where she has been
visiting her parents, MR. and MRS. MILLER.
A large number of Derby people attended the Old Settlers Reunion at Chariton
Tuesday and Wednesday.
CLARA BURGDORF and nephew, WAYNE WEBB, left Tuesday for Custer City, Okla.,
to visit her sister, MRS. BERT WEBB.
ALBERT YOCOM underwent an operation yesterday morning in the hospital at
Keokuk, for appendicitis. He will be brought home as soon as he is able,
and may have to give up his school work for this year.
REV. and MRS. MUNN and children went to Greenfield today to spend a few days
with her parents.
MRS. F.M. SMITH of Washington, Ia., came Saturday, called by the serious
illness of her sister, MRS. HENRY WILLOUGHBY.
