Sylvester Emmett Gardner&Sarah Spurgin
Sylvester Emmett Gardner was born in Carl County, Ohio, July 14, 1851, was killed in a railroad acciden near Leon, Iowa, February 19, 1900, aged 48 years, 7 months, and 5 days. He came to Clayton County, Iowa with his parents in 1853 and thence to Decatur County in the following year. In 1865 he gave his life to Christ, uniting with the Christian Church at Leon, and continued an exemplary and devoted member until his death.
In 1872, he was married to Sarah Amanda Spurgin and in the same year removed to Jewell County, Kansas. He removed to the present home on a farm near Leon in 1875. There were born unto this home five children, three boys and two girls, four of whom survive; Bert, Blanche, Ethel and Roy.
In this death not only the special estimation and love in which he was held by all make the bereavement heavy and sore but the distressing circumstances make it overwhelming. May God's infinite love reach the deaths of our afflicition.
Brother Gardner's supreme interest was the cause of his Master and allowing this to purify nd intensify all other relations to home. The wife, children and kindred receive the tenderest sympathy of all.
