Dear Connie,
Thanks for the data on Richard.
It is my understanding Augustus T. Gardner had one child before he died in Kaufman, Texas. He served as a 2d Lt. in the 19th Texas Cavalry in the Civil War, enlisting 1 Apr 1862 in Kaufman. He was commander of Company G in August,1863. He served through 1865. He was 27 when he enlisted and his occupation was given as a merchant. His sister, Sara Albertine Patience Gardner married Charles Cornelius Nash, in Kaufman Co., TX. They had sons William Albertine Nash and Charles R. Nash before she died in the 1860's. Her husband remarried and had numerous children by his second wife. She was known as "Allie" and is buried in the Kaufman City Cemetery with many of her descendants. Her husband, Charles Cornelius Nash, was born in TN, probably Davidson County. He moved with his parents to San Augustine Co., TX about 1835. His father was William Nash, descended from the Nashes of Norfolk, VA. His mother was Louisa Allen Temple, descended from the Temples of Pr. George Co., VA. They were Baptists in Kaufman and I believe they may have been Baptists in TN.
I appreciated the lead on the Gardner book and ordered a copy from Norman. It shows Joshua Gardner and wife Ann ? of Southampton[he died 1793] had a son John who [1]married Betsey Pepworth [according to the marriage bonds of Southampton Co.] and [2]died in VA. He also shows a brother of Joshua named John who [1]died in 1778 in Southampton Co. where his will naming his son was probated, [2]was married to an Ann ?, and [3]who had a son named John who married Martha Joyner. Neither had a son named John who married Patience Whitehead, according to Mr. Gardner's book. Do you think one of the two Johns remarried to Patience and moved to TN? If so, which one? I would appreciate your thoughts on how to tie John Gardner of TN to Joshua gardner of Southampton, and how to resolve the Betsey Pepworth marriage.
Thanks for the help.
Sincerely,
Robert Park
