Gantner, Cantener, Canteneur in Lorraine
Posted by: Bruno Canteneur Date: March 29, 2001 at 11:27:10
  of 66

My name is Bruno Canteneur and I am living in Lorraine (France). My ancestor was Christoph Gantner ; he certainly came from Vorarlberg (Austria) circa 1680 as mason in the destroyed Lorraine after the thirty-years War (1618-1648).
On the origin of the name "Gantner" : an old austrian text says : " Peter and Johann the Gantners, who are living on the GANDA " Ganda is a reto-roman term which means "area with stones".
In Lorraine, it's possible to find other forms coming from Gantner like Cantener, Gandner.
