Thanks, for the information, Kurt.I looked at the Leomaster book in my local library, and was terribly frustrated by its format and lack of index. However, I dismissed the Stephen Gano listed there because my ancestor was born in 1815, not 1836 and never went to Ohio.
I checked out the Civil War records and found 2 George Ganos:One was listed with a birth year "abt 1826" living in Alexandra, Hunterdon, New Jersey on the draft register from June of 1863.The other listed in U.S. Civil War Soldier Records and Profiles 1861-1865 was a Cpl. George Gano who enlisted on 7 Mar 1865 in Company C, Pennsylvania 28th Infantry Regiment and either was mustered out or deserted on 20 Jun 1865.I found 2 records for him that were identical except for the difference in how he left the infantry.I think that the Pennsylvania George is the more likely to be the "brother George" mentioned in the letters that Stephen wrote to his wife from the hospital.
I also found grave listing for a George W. Ganoe, who was born in 1833, enlisted in the Civil War on 31 Mar 1864 in Uniontown, PA, and served as a private in Company K, 116th Infantry Penn Volunteers. He was promoted to corporal on 2 Jun 1865 and mustered out on 14 Jul 1865.These dates don't match the George above. However, the Find a Grave website, did give information about this George's parents:John Ganoe (1779-1867) and Sarah Clovis Ganoe (1813-1890).I doubt that this is the correct George, because of his mother's birth date.It would only work if Sarah C. was a 2nd wife, which is possible given the age difference between mother and father. That would make Stephen and George half-brothers.
Thanks again for the information,
Anne
