Roger,

I was at the DAR Library in Washington D.C. this week and reviewed the book on the Gannaway lineage written by Michael Pollack of Mechanicsville, VA. He too thinks that Tabitha is the daughter of John Sr. He mentions that the Buckingham County records were burned in the Civil War so we will never know for sure. What we do know though are that there is no evidence she belongs to any of the other Gannaway families, all of whom left behind good evidence of their lineage. The facts you list are good evidence, as well. Another good piece of evidence is that in 1787 Robert Lorton stands surety as Mary Byrum Gannaway relinguishes her dower rights and sells property. Pollack places John Sr's death therefore in 1786 or 1787 else why would she be relinguishing dower rights? Notice that the reference you cite in 1789 does not mention John Sr. I also think it is very interesting that Robert Lorton's regiment Captain, John Morton, owns the adjoining property to John Sr. I believe that is how Robert and Tabitha met. Mortons wife was Mary Anderson and there are many connections between the Gannaways and Andersons. Robert and Tabitha were also married in Prince Edward county, where his regiment was posted. Now, where does Mary Scott Byrum come from?
