Are you still working on the family of James GAMMILL/Sarah (poss. WHITES)?Have you made any progress since this 2008 posting??
I 'think' that this James Gammill 'could' have been the son of my direct ancestors, William Gammill (1768-1847)/Ann McGaughey (c1770-1847).William/Ann married in Blount Co, TN on 12 Oct 1797.They were in Bedford Co, TN 'by' 1818 and possibly 'by' 1812.In October of 1830, they and many of their children (Elizabeth m. Alfred Balch; Andrew m. Jane Whities; Mary 'Polly' m. Isaac Odell; Martha m. John J. Adams; and Samuel K. Gammill (my ancestor)] migrated to Coles Co, IL.It is known that their son, William Gammill [Jr](m. Eleanor H. Parkes) and daughter, Margaret (m. John Walden) remained in Bedford.[Margaret moved to Coles bet 1837-1840 when her husband died].William Gammill died in Coles Co, IL 12 Nov 1847.His LW&T identified ALL of the above children and a deceased daughter, Jane Morton, but importantly -- for you -- he also identified a son named James.
The man who did the most research on this GAMMILL family included a son named James Gammill for William Gammill/Ann McGaughey, but had no further information on that son.I've see the 1830 and 1840 census records for 'a' James Gammill in Bedford and wonder if he could have been the son of my ancestors William Gammill/Ann McGaughey. In addition, the 1820 census for Wm. Gammill supports a son b. ca 1797.I'd be glad to explore this possibility with you.
