Letters from J.B. & M.T Gambrell
I have an original letter from J.B. (James Bruton) Gambrell and another from his wife M.T. (Mary T. Corbell) Gambrell. The letters were written in 1884 to my g-g-grandfather, Wade a. Funk. The letters express sympathy to Bro. Funk for the loss of his son who died at the age of 19.The letters are on the letterhead of the "Baptist Record" in Clinton, MS when he was editor of that publication.
J.B. Gambrell's biography does not mention that he was pastor of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church (now Wallerville Baptist Church) near New Albany, MS.This should not be confused with Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church where other Gambrells preached. They are about ten miles from each other.Wade Funk was one of the founders of Mt. Pleasant and J.B. Gambrell came there soon after the civil war was over.He and his wife also taught in the school located across the road from the church. He did not remain there very long but a lasting friendship developed between the Funks and Gambrells.
I also have a letter from Ira (?) Gambrell written several years earlier to Penelope Funk (Wade's daughter). It relates to Penelope's planned visit to see them in Oxford, MS.
I will be happy to send copies to any of their descendants.Contact me by E-mail and I will furnish my mailing address for you to send stamped, self addressed envelope.
