horse to join Regulators on 1768 at Rowan Co. NC The
Regulators had started armed resistance to British
laws. Survivor of the Regulator defeat on 1771 at the
battle of Alamance. After this battle he fled to the
present Ashe Co. Joined the militia of Captain William
Nall. Fought Tories at Old Fields skirmish in
present-day Ashe Co. On 9/18/1780 signal fires had
brough the warning to Watauga Co. NC (present-day).
Sevier sent him to warn the militia units in the
mountains of the approach of Ferguson's troops. He rode
to VA to alert Colonel Campbell and his 400 troops,
arriving on 9/19/1780. After riding all night, the
first horse died while crossing the river at the farm
of Captain Enoch Osborne. He rode a plow horse from
Osborne's to the Holston River, where it died. He
obtained one more horse to finish the journey. This was
a 100 mile ride. Wounded on the approach to the battle
of King's Mountain. Militia at Rowan Co. NC RS
pension W7504. Served under father-in-law as Sgt and
Lt. in NC Line. Sent by Sevier on 100 mile ride
9/18/1780-9/19/1780 to collect Col. Campbell's 400
over-the-mountain boys for King's Mountain battle,
killing 3 horses during ride. Justice of Peace. Lived
on 1800 at Ashe Co. NC males 2 10-15(Robert, Martin),
1 26-45(him?); females 2 0-9(Thursa, Narcessa), 1
10-15, 1 26-35. First senator for Ashe Co. 1810-1811. A
James Gambill of Wilkes Co. NC identified widow at
age 82 in 1853 for pension application. Captain.
