In the story of Shaftsbury it tells why there may have been a split in the Chittenden/Galusha relationship. October 1778 Jonas Galusha married Mary Chittenden, a daughter of the first Gov. of Vermont, Thomas Chittenden. Mary was the sister of Jonas' chief political foe, Martin Chittenden. Jonas lost to him for governor in a bitterly disputed election in 1813 in which Jonas had a slight edge in popular vote (16,828 to 16, 532) but the legislature elected Chittenden. A similar close vote ensued in 1814 (17,466 for Chittenden and 17,411 for Galusha and the legislature again elected Chittenden. But in 1815 Galusha defeated Chittenden, his BROTHER-IN-LAW at the polls 18,055 to 16,632
