Yes, Freda, this is the same Caleb. His wife was Elizabeth Maclean, daughter of Allan Maclean and Mary Sloan. His oldest son William lived in Savannah, Georgia, and married a woman from New York, Letitia Totten, who was brought to Savannah as a child by her mother. William apparently never returned to New England, but Letitia visited the relatives there at least once. Their oldest daughter Eliza married Allison Smith, and the couple were my great grandparents. Eliza was the only one of William and Letitia’s children who had children of their own. Their oldest son, William Maclean Galpin, was a blockade runner in the Civil War. I don’t know what he died of, but he married in 1867 and died a month later.
Caleb and Elizabeth Maclean had William in 1804, Eliza in 1805, David in 1807, Sarah Gowley in 1809, Lois Beckley in 1811, George Peat in 1814, Mary Sloan in 1818, and Allan Maclean in 1820.This information came from the book, “The Galpin Family in America,” by William Galpin, 1955. The research was done by a distant cousin in the 1960’s. I don’t have a copy of the book, but Eunice copied all the relevant information and some interesting notes. I would be glad to share, but can’t vouch for the accuracy, although I don’t doubt it.
Thanks for your interest. I am very fond of Caleb, and would like to have met him.
Best Regards
Jean
