Dear Mary. I do not "see" Josephine in any 1850 Ill. census data but that census is difficult/impossible to read and the name was either missed or recorded under another first name (i.e. Josephine may have been a middle name not recorded in the census-a not unusual circumstance. However, from the information you gave me I feel it is very certain that Josephine is the daughter of Josiah and Sally Simmons Gallion. Josiah is in the 1830 and 1840 Ill. census. He moved to Ill. from either TN or northern Ala. ca. 1825 or so. Josephine's birthplace (TN) jibes with Josiah's vitae. Also, Josephine moved to Shannon Co., MO. probably to live near her brother, Claiborne Gallion. Josiah and Sally were married in Grainger Co., TN ca. 1810. Josiah's parentage is guesswork also. However, I feel it most likely that his parents were a Thomas and Marg. Yont Gallion who were married in Surry Co., NC ca. 1785. We can be even more certain that Josiah's grandparents were Jacob and Eliz. Arnold Gallion who were married in Harford Co., MD ca. 1753. Jacob and Eliz. migrated to Surry Co., NC ca. 1780 by way of southern VA. Jacob in turn was born ca. 1733 to a Thomas and Mary Young Gallion who were themselves married ca. 1731 in Harford Co., MD. Thomas was born ca. 1707 to a John and Mary Wright? Gallion also of Harford Co., MD (Harford Co. was known prior to 1776 as St. George's Parish of Baltimore Co., MD). John in turn was born ca. 1670 to a Joseph Gallion also of Harford Co., MD. Joseph was the "original immigrant" to America having emigrated to America from London, England in 1664. Joseph became a tobacco planter, albeit a not very successful one unfortunately. Joseph was in turn the youngest son (born ca. 1633) of a William and Joan Palmer Gallion who were married ca. 1615 in Chigwell, Essex. In England the name Gallion is considered to be an anglicized spelling of a French name, Gallienne. The name Gallion goes back in English records as far as 1160. However, I am not aware of any research on the name in either England or France. And there the trail ends for now. I hope this has been useful. Please do not hesitate to contact me if I may be of any further assistance. RedVdub1@aol.com
