Hello Mary...

I have found an Ephraim Cunningham (5 yrs) in the 1850 household of Thomas and Mary Gallion in Knox Co., TN. Mary was 58 yrs. old and Thomas' (63 yrs) 2nd wife. I don't know Mary's maiden or perhaps widowed name. I do know that Thomas' 1st wife was an Alvira Deal and that was Syntha's mother I'm sure. We know that Thomas was born in Burke Co., NC which makes him almost certainly a son to the Thomas Gallion in the 1790 Burke Co., NC census. Interestingly, Ephraim Cunningham eventually took the surname of Gallion, served in the Civil War (USA) and after the war settled in Logan Co., Ill.

I know Syntha's siblings very well. We can't be sure of the 1790 Thomas Gallion's lineage but I am almost positive that he must have been a brother to the Jacob Gallion of the 1790 Surry Co., NC census and, therefore, a son to Thomas and Mary Young Gallion of Harford Co., MD. and a Gson to the original Gallion immigrant to America, one Joseph Gallion.

Joseph came to this country (Bush River, Harford Co., Maryland) in 1664 from London, England where he was born in 1633 to William and Joanne Palmer Gallion. William was born in 1592 in London to unknown parents. The Gallion name goes back in scattered London records to 1340. Scattered English records have the Galyon name (Gallion, etc.) back as far as 1160. It is considered to be a name of French origin with the original spelling being Gallienne.

I hope the above has been useful. Do you know the maiden/previously married names of Thomas' 2nd wife Mary?
