Lillie Mae Gallion is probably the daughter of Benjamin Thomas and Annie Brannum (?) Gallion of Yell Co., ARK. Benjamin T. was born ca. 1840 in Monroe Co., Ill. to Madison and Elizabeth Rutledge Gallion. Madison was born ca. 1810 "very probably" to a Jacob and Barbary Gallion of Jackson Co., TN. Jacob was in turn born ca. 1770 in Surry or Wilkes Co., NC to Jacob and Elizabeth Arnold Gallion. Jacob and Eliz. were married ca. 1753 in Harford Co., MD (then called St. George's Parish of Baltimore Co., MD). Jacob's parents were Thomas and Mary Young Gallion who were married ca. 1731 in Harford Co. Thomas was born ca. 1707 to John and Mary Wright (?) Gallion also of Harford Co. John was in turn born ca. 1670 to Joseph Gallion and either his first wife Alice or his 2nd wife Sarah (last names unknown). Joseph was the original immigrant to America, immigrating to Maryland in 1664 from London, England. Joseph became a tobacco planter in Maryland, albeit not a terribly successful one. Joseph was born in London ca. 1633 to William and Joan Palmer Gallion who were married in Chigwell, Essex ca. 1615. And there the trail stops for now.

The name Gallion in England is considered to be of French origin with the original French spelling being Gallienne. There are scattered English records for the name going back to 1160. Today in France there are about a thousand families with the name Gallienne, mostly in NW France. I know of no research in either England or France at this time.

I hope this has been of help to you.

George T. Galyon
