I am looking for any information regarding Arthur Albert Gallatin, my grandfather. According to family verbal tradition, he was born in Geneva, Illinois (year unknown), married my grandmother, Wilda Bailey in Helena, Montana (year unknown) and then dropped her off at her parent's house in 1917 on his way to join up with his Army unit (unit unknown) to go to Europe during WW1.
Wilda told my father that Arthur died in France, but we have no proof of this. The Army records were in a records center that burned down. I have not been able to turn up a birth certificate, marriage license or death certificate. We have no pictures or paper records at all.
A historian specializing in WW1 says that the Montana Army recruits would indeed have been mustering at the right place and time, so that portion of the story is at least credible.
Our family would be very grateful for any information. Thank you.
