Hello Christopher,
You may want to check our the Canadian National Archives site. There is a searchable database of the First WW Canadian Expeditionary Force on the site. I went and did a quick search for Surname: Gallant, and Give Name: Charles, and one result was returned GALLANT, CHARLES R.
The web site is at http://www.archives.ca
The search will tell you his regimental number, and the other info you need to order his attestation papers (which should give you his place of birth, parents, age, etc.), which cost .40 per page for photocopies. The details for ordering are on the site.
