Hache (du Gallant) was the first white settler on Prince Edward Island (1690?)
Hache was French, rumoured as a bastard of the Bourbon King of France, working for the English.
He enticed his & brothers to join him and the family became the core settlement on the island. Hache was apparent "given" the surname "Gallant" owing to his treatment of the indigenous population.
I don't know what year they dropped Hache in favor of Gallant but probably around the time the english king, ceded they title to the Scottish King. The Scot King Gave large land grants to Scots of already occupied lands, causing a huge French exedus south.
