Martha,
I picked up a book on the Maritimes "Michel Hache-Gallant et ses descendants tome 2"by Patrice Gallant which states that at his baptism in Trois Rivieres Que. in 1668 he was described as a eight year old boy whose father was French and mother "Esquimaude". As there were no esquimo in this region it is thought she was more likely metis or micmac. I also read this in "The Life and Times of Michel Hache-Gallant" which is on the Web. Hope this is of interest to you,
Louise
