I posted this above but thought it might pertain to you:
While researching my family in Lawrence County, Al. (northwest, along the Tennessee River), I discovered orphan court papers saying that a John Gallagher had been appointed guardian ad litem for my ancestor's minor children.
This was in 1834, when Lawrence County was still largely populated by mixed-blood families, so I can't quite figure out what he was doing there or how he was connected to my family (the Whites). Here is the info from the annotated 1820 census on a Lawrence County website:
Gallagher, John: 2,0,0,0,2,0,0,2 (B Donegal County, Ireland ca 1784. To America 12 Aug 1812. Gave his name to the Gallagher tract and "Gallagher Hill," later known as "Science Hill" site of two early Moulton schools. This is the present site of the Lawrence Baptist Medical Center, and area directly in front of same to Court Street. The Lawrence County Historical Commission, under the auspices of President Dr. Robert Rhyne and Board Chairman Ray Campbell erected in 2002 a historical marker to note this site, John Gallagher, the Moulton Male High School, the Decatur District Male and Female High School, and the 1888 lynching of a Black by a mob of Blacks which occurred onsite.
