Hello Stephanie,
My great, great uncle - "Thomas Friend Gale" married Lavinia Balfort who is considered to be the first female balloonist of South Australia. Thomas had arrived in NSW around 1869 where he met up with his sister Emma Matilda Gale, who at the time was resident at The Rocks,Sydney. After making a few balloon ascents in Sydney Thomas moved on to South Australia where he established himself as the pioneer balloonist of that state. Although Thomas was in America in 1861- and may have remained there until arriving in NSW, his mother, Matilda Freeman, at one time stated that he had been born in Ireland, which seems to be correct inasmuch as his father, George Burcher Gale, was stationed in that country firstly as a Blockade Inspector and secondary as a member of the Revenue Police. Can you tell me how many children he and Lavinia had?
Best Wishes,
Mildred Reynolds.
