John Gaither, Early Maryland, Cheshire Origins?

I am researching the Thomas Merry who came from England to Virginia in 1620, then emigrated again, with other Puritans, to Maryland in about 1648. His will (1670s) left a bequest to John Gaither, who apparently was also a resident of Virginia before moving to Maryland.

I found in the online Maryland archives a 1679 deed to John Marrye (or could be Marryot) of Anne Arundel County that mentions the adjacent land of John Gather. The property is located "between Anne Arundel River & South River." I'm not sure that information is helpful to Gaither researchers, but I thought I would pass it on.

Merry (Mery, Meeres, other spellings) is a surname found in the early parish records of Cheshire county in England. Cheshire borders Wales, and many of the Virginia emigrants to Maryland were Welsh. There is an online database of Cheshire parish records, and I looked for Gaither and variations there. 19 records of Gather baptisms appear in one parish, Wybunbury, between 1658 and 1747. There are three Merry or Merrye records in the same parish, between 1640 and 1786. Gather and Merry appear in other parishes in Cheshire, for marriages and burials. Wybunbury is about 25 miles from Mere, the village where the Merry family may have originated.

Is anyone else exploring a Cheshire origin for the Gather / Gaither surname? There is a 2000 post here that discusses the family that remained in England.
