I'm not sure what help I will be, but I know my grandparents lived in Lake City during the 40s, and my grandfather, at some point in time, also dropped the "i" from his name... it was restored to his last 3 children by an aunt who did the filing for birth certs.

My grandfather is Cecil Perry Ga(i)ther.

I will be posting what information I have, and requesting any addition information anyone else may have, in another post.
