Hi Frederic; Just a little response to your item. Harry Wright Newman DID NOT start the idea that Eleanor Whittle married Edward Gaither (1714-1777). That was 1st published in Founders of Anne Arundel and Howard Counties, Maryland, by Prof. J.D.Warfield in 1905, page 423. Long before that Gaithers handed down the notion that they were married. Dr. Phillip Fletcher Laugenaur, in has unpublished papers, during the mid 1800's, stated the same thing. The lady who started me tracing Gaithers in 1956, Mrs. Thomas R. Gaither, (1887-1980), was the dau.-in-law of JAMES EDWARD GAITHER, prominent attorney from Louisville (see Lawyers and LawMakers of Kentucky). She had a collection of old papers and letters written between 1875 - 1900 that I saw and handcopies many notes. From these we know that Eleanor Whittle's maiden name was DAVIS, and Mr. Newman included data from one of the letters in his book, Anne Arundel Gentry, in 1970. Although copy machines were almost unheard of, I did make a copy of that letter and sent it to Mr. Newman. These letters were between various Gaither cousins who were prominent and well educated, and who all knew one another either in person or thru family members. They were: NATHAN GAITHER (1844-1918) whose 1st wife was a dau. of Conf. Gen. Felix Zollicoffer, and was a descendant of Capt. Basil Gaither; Dr. HENRY gAITHER (1801-1891), son of Brice Gaither, and grandson of Edward and Eleanor.; BURGESS SIDNEY GAITHER, (1807-1892), son of Burgess Gaither, and grandson of Edward and Eleanor Gaither.; GEORGE RIGGS GAITHER (1858-1921,who did extensive Gaither research both in America and in England; Dr.Laugenaur; Prof Warfield and JAMES EDWARD GAITHER 1852-1902 Eleanor Whittle, widow, was mentioned as the wife of Edward Gaither, and then one letter stated that her maiden name was DAVIS. There was a large interest in the Gaither family histgory byh these men during that time period in anticipation of Prof. Warfield's book
