William Gassaway, Davie Co., to Perquimans Co., NC
I put in a few key words and did not see anything on this man.I live near Gaithersburg, MD and I had ancestors who lived in both these areas of NC, so the Gaither name is familiar to me.From Volume 2 of the Year Book of the Pasquotank Co., (NC) Historical Society:
"William Gassaway Gaither, Educator.Born near Mocksville, Davie Co., NC, Nov 29, 1848.Parents were Burgess and Sarah (McMahan) Gaither.Married Elizabeth Skinner Wood, May 31, 1876.Children - Charles Wood (md. Lula Hayes); Helen Wingfield; Sara McMahan (Mrs. G.B.C. Lewis); Elizabeth Wood (Mrs. E.C. Conger); William Gassaway, Jr. (md. Helen V. Robinson); Rev. Burgess Wood (md. Penelope Weddell); Mary Skinner (Mrs. R.C. Preston); Henrietta Martin (Mrs. W.H. Huffines); Louise Jocelyn (Mrs. R.B. Albertson).William attented old Trinity College, Trinity, NC.Was principal of Hertford Academy (Perquimans Co.); Superintendent Public Instruction, Perquimans County. Agent, Norfolk & Southern R.R.; manager Perquimans River Steam Boat Line. Mem. Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, Hertford.Died Sept. 30, 1918; buried in Episcopal Cemetery, Hertford."
