The John GAITHER that married Mary was not the John born ca. 1620. The records show that the John GAITHER that married Mary in Virginia is the same John (b. ca. 1599) that arrived in 1635 with wife Joan (no evidence her maiden name is MORLEY). This John received 800 acres in land grants. The records state that the "aforesaid" John GAITHER (meaning the one who received the 800 acres with wife Joan) with consent of his wife MARY, assigned this land in 1649 to John GODFREY. It is the John born ca. 1599 who went to Maryland and whose second wife and widow Mary received administration (not died) on his estate on 24 Nov. 1652. (not 20 Nov. as published in "Anne Arundel Gentry.")The elder John was not still living in 1666 as alleged by some.
There is no proof that the maiden name of Mary was WATERS, only that in records, John GATER is called a brother-in-law to Henry WATERS/WALTERS. They could have been brothers-in-law by either:
John's first wife Joan being a WATERS.
John's second wife Mary being a WATERS.
Henry WATER's wife being a sister to John GATER.
Henry WATER's wife being a sister to either of John GATER's wives, Joan or Mary.
