Just found this today along with your queery.In the 1861 Census for Leeds Township,Leeds County, Ontario,Canada there is a family of Gonyeau's.As they are all French descent and Roman Catholic religion.I think the French spelling would be Gagne.Any way there's a John Gonyeau age 21.That would fit your profile being born in 1840.Parents were Manliff Gonyeau and Margret.
Also listed Mary 18yrs,Julia 16 yrs,Margret 13 yrs,Illegible name age 5,and?harles(Charles I would think)age 4.I donn't know if it fits your search but just thought I'd pass it on.
