Gage - Rathlin Island, Antrim
I don't have any Gage relations that I know of but I'm doing research into all of the Rathlin families from the 18th and 19th centuries.
I've got a bit of a puzzle regarding the Rathlin Gages and hope that someone can help.
According to the Agricultural Census of 1803 there was only one Mrs Gage on the Island, at Church Quarter. She was, most likely, Barbara Richardson, widow of Robert Gage who died in 1801.
To my knowledge Barbara and Robert only had two children:
Robert, Birth : 20 OCT 1790 Rathlin, Death : 30 SEP 1862
Barbara Frances, Birth : 15 JAN 1778 Death : 23 AUG 1859
The problem is that I know for a fact that there was another Gage on the Island, John who was born in the 1780's or early 1790's and married Mary McCurdy on the island before 1823. They produced:
John, born 1823 on Rathlin, he married Mary Horan (daughter of Alexander and Margaret McCurdy also from Rathlin) in 1853 in Greenock, Scotland. John died in 1887 in Gourock, Scotland.
and Robert born 1832 on Rathlin.
My question is who was John Gage's parents??? since there was only the one Gage family on the Island in 1803. Could he be an unknown son of Robert and Barbara???
Any ideas welcome.
By the way John and Mary Horan produced at least 4 children, one female who was called Sunderlina. I, personally, have never come across this forename before and was wondering if there could be any Gage/Sunderland (Sutherland if you allow for an Irish accent) links anywhere.
