1815 Bible of NH Rev. War Soldiers Daughter
Just acquired in New England, a 958 page leather bound "Old and New Testaments .. First Brookfield Edition .. E. Merriam & Co. 1815" with a page signed "The Property of Phebe Cutter, A Present by my Mother." There are four family record pages in fine penmanship that allow for these findings in the Captain Joseph Cutter, Captain Joseph Cutter Jr. and Captain James Gage related families. Phebe Gage (1774-1871) was the 9th of 10 children born to Capt. James Gage (1736-1815)of Essex, Bradford, Mass. and later Amherst, New Hampshire (likely a Militia Captain with probable Revolutionary War service, read on further, and Sarah Lamson (1739 Amherst-1832 Jaffrey, NH) the giver of the Bible. In 1804 Phebe married Capt. Joseph Cutter(1777-1860 of Jaffrey, likely a Militia Captain in New Hampshire. His Father, Captain Joseph Cutter (1752 Lexington, Mass.-1840 Jaffrey, NH) was a Mass. farmer who moved to Jaffrey circa 1773 and served with the Provincial Forces before Boston in the American Revolutionary War, received a government pension, and also served as a Captain in the NH State Militia. If only this book could speak of its many associations. It is in very good condition for its 185 plus years of life. 5 1/2" by 8 3/4" by 3 1/2". The binding is intact, the pages show their age with very few flaws, the very last page of Revelations is missing, and the covers show normal wear and one 1" by 1 1/2" rough spot to the front
