DEATH of an EDITOR -- ‘Alta California’ -- William GAGAN, one of the proprietors of the Oakland Daily ‘News,’ died at his residence on Telegraph avenue, about half past 4 o’clock yesterday (Saturday) afternoon, of a congestive chill. He had been sick and confined to his house for 2 weeks.
He was the founder of the Weekly ‘News,’ the only paper published in Oakland for several years. He engaged in the business in Oakland about 7 years ago. Prior to that he had been one of the editors of a journal at Syracuse, New York, and had been connected with several Western papers. He was born in Ireland, emigrated to the United States at an early age. He leaves a widow and 4 children to mourn his loss. He has for years taken a part in political affairs, and the causes that created a few bitter enemies also drew to him a circle of warm and true friends, and now that death has removed him from the community, all will concede that his many excellent qualities as a man entitled him to esteem and respect.
