Origin of Ohio Gaffins?

Hi! I'd be grateful for any info on the origins of the Ohio Gaffins, including the origin of the name. I'm of the Lithuanian Gaffins by way of New York, so no relation, but I've been curious ever since I learned there were Gaffins west of the Hudson :-).
