The following obituary appeared on Page A10 of the 12 Mar 2003 edition of The Sun Herald newspaper.

Dr. Gaddy's wife's mother was my aunt, Mittie Burkett, who married Clifford C. Smith.

I have no other information on the Gaddy line; the obituary is provided simply for your information. Of course, if YOU have information on Mary Virginia Smith, her mother, etc. then of course I would like to hear from you!

GULFPORT - Dr. Ira Eugene Gaddy Jr., M.D., died Monday, March 10, 2003 from complications related to Parkinson's disease.

Dr. Gaddy was born Nov. 4, 1921 in Bond, Mississippi. In 1940, he attended Jones County Junior College for two years before entering the Army during WWII. He served in England, France, and Germany under General Patton, where he was a member of the Allied Invasion Force. Upon return to the U.S., he attended Ole Miss and continued his medical education at Tulane Medical School, graduating in 1950. He entered family practice in Long Beach for five years and returned to Tulane, where he completed his residency in obstetrics and gynecology in 1960. At that point he returned to his beloved Miss. Gulf Coast and practiced OB GYN for over 40 years. He and his brother Hurd (his partner in OB GYN) together delivered over 20,000 babies.

He met Mary Virginia Smith, who was working as a nurse at Touro Medical Center, during his medical school years, and they have been married for over 53 years. Together they raised four children.

He was a member of the Gulfport Yacht Club, Long Beach United Methodist Church, and the Ole Miss Loyalty Foundation, as well as serving on the medical staffs of Memorial Hospital, Garden Park Hospital and Gulf Coast Community Hospital.

Dr. Gaddy absolutely loved life and people. His watchwords as a physician were "amiability, availability and ability." He has delivered as many as three generations of children numerous times. He loved golf, fishing and the Ole Miss Rebels. He worked hard as a physician but always took time for his family. He was a great father and husband.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Jane. He is survived by his wife, Mary Gaddy; his sons, Gene, Jerry and Jody Gaddy; grandchildren, Ira IV, Cliff, Janie,Jacob,Molly and Mary Claire Gaddy; his brother, James Hurd Gaddy; sisters, Martha Bounds and Syble Martin; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He will be sadly missed by his family, friends and the countless patients who have known and loved him throughout his years on the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. tonight, Wednesday, at Riemann Funeral Home, 25th Avenue in Gulfport. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, March 13, 2003 in the funeral home chapel, followed by burial in Southern Memorial Park and Mausoleum in Biloxi.
