Information on Gacquin name part 2
The Primary Valuation of Tenements in Ireland or Griffith's Valuation as it is more commonly known is one of the most important sources for genealogical research in Ireland. This work was carried out as part of the taxation process to finance the Poor Law Unions of Ireland which maintained the Workhouses in each Union.
Each occupier of property is listed and a description of the tenemenent is given. The Valuations Office has maps which locate each land holding and house. The National Library have prepared an index of Surnames for Griffith's Valuation and it shows a total of tewlve houses of the name Gacquin in both counties Galway and Roscommon, although none use the spelling Gacquin as used today. The Cancelation Books in the Valuations Office, Dublin allow one to trace each tenement to the present day.
The Gacquin entries are as follows and are traced where the information is available to me.

John Jacquin, house, 1 rood
Parish of Fohanagh
Townland of Doon Upper
Denis Gaughwin, house offices and land 12 acres 14 perches, (possibly the Denis Gaughwin married to Jane Kelly in Doone with family in the 1827-1830 period).
Parish of Kilgerril
Townland of Caltraghlea
John Gankevin, house and land 1 acre 1 rood 4 perches and 33 perches (this is the John Gaughwin 1809-1879 married to Winny Craughwell in Fohanagh Parish Register with family from 1839 to 1845 period).
In summary it can be said that most of the recorded families can be traced to the present day. What is more interesting about Griffith's Valuation and the Gacquin name is why more names are not listed especially in the Fohanagh and Kilgerril civil parishes.
